Eric Parker presentation

Chairman David Borley (left) presents Eric Parker with his Certificate of Appreciation

At Monday’s rehearsal, the choir gave a resounding welcome back to Eric Parker, who had been missing with health problems since before Christmas. In addition to being a stalwart member of the Bass section and the Choir Committee, for the past six years, Eric has carried out the combined roles of Concert Secretary, Press and Publicity Officer and also administered the sales of concert tickets. A huge job indeed and time for a well earned retirement from these roles, so we took the opportunity to present Eric with a Certificate of Appreciation as a token of our regard for him and all the work he has done.

It had been decided that Eric’s role should not be passed on to one man alone, so in his place we have George Hladowski as Concert Secretary and David Barraclough as Press and Publicity Officer (see the Contacts page for details). Eric will continue to have a role in the sale of tickets to the public, but he will now have the assistance of Charles Sowden.

Ron Horne presents Alan with his prize as winner of the Movember competition

Our joint concert with the hugely talented ladies choir Opus 44 at the Octagon Live, Keighley was very enjoyable and well-attended (a concert time of 2.30 on a Sunday afternoon was very much a new venture for us).

It also marked the results of Steeton’s competition to see who could grow the best moustache in November. Ron Horne from our 2nd Tenor section had challenged the choir as a largely male organisation (but not forgetting accompanist Pat Jones and the Ladies Group) to do our bit for MOVEMBER. This extremely worthwhile movement seeks to raise awareness of (and funds for) men’s health issues, which tend not to have a very high public profile.

MOVEMBER’S most visible activity is this annual challenge to all men to leave their top lip unshaved during November - as a means of a) creating a talking point and b) getting sponsorship to raise funds for the cause.

Over a dozen of our men took up the challenge and the winner was - MD Alan Clark! Alan was presented with his prize at the end of the concert.

Alan’s moustache in all its glory!

The venture also raised £768 for Movember. Well done Ron for kick starting this.

Steeton members on Songs of Praise

Palm Sunday 2014

SOP_04 Pam RhodesWhen BBC’s Songs Of Praise came to Bradford Cathedral recently, they asked, in the normal way, for local church choirs to come and swell the congregation. The BBC also asked if Steeton MVC could also provide some of our singers to come along and swell the singing (church choirs are nearly always short of men!).

SOP_01The service from Bradford was spread over two separate programmes; the second of which was shown on Palm Sunday.

The choir has also been asked to come along to another recording in the near future, this time in Leeds.

Here is a small photo gallery taken from the Palm Sunday programme,
